The aim of this project is to update the European Inventory on validation of non-formal and informal learning for 32 countries (EU 28 plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) in order to support the monitoring of the implementation of the 2012 Council Recommendation on validation of non-formal and informal learning.

In 2011, the 'Austrian Strategy for Lifelong Learning LLL:2020' was launched.

The Commission 'New Skills Agenda for Europe' (2016) emphasised the need for countries to have a ‘better understanding of performance of graduates’.

Through this study, the Commission aims to create a better knowledge base about the availability of skills audits to different target groups, the variations in how skills audits are carried out, what they entail, who is involved and which assessment and identification methods are being used.
