    Sustainability in Vocational Education and Training (VET)

    5th G.R.E.A.T. Conference

    Organiser: German Research Center for Comparative Vocational Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.), University of Cologne

    The con­fe­rence will address current issues and findings within the context of sus­taina­bi­li­ty in VET. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), initiated in 2015 in the United Nations’ publi­ca­ti­on ‘Transforming our World’, declare VET as a central aspect of Goal 4 of the SDGs, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning oppor­tu­ni­ties for all” (UN, 2015, 17).

    Within the context of the con­fe­rence, a broad under­stan­ding of the concept of sus­taina­bi­li­ty will be applied, inte­gra­ting sci­en­ti­fic papers from a wide range of per­spec­ti­ves. Consequently, both con­cep­tu­al and empirical con­tri­bu­ti­ons are welcomed. In addition to eco­lo­gi­cal topics, social and economic issues can also be the focus of inve­sti­ga­ti­on, whether at the macro, meso or micro-level of VET. Contributions may also focus on formal, non-formal, or informal learning, as well as on topics such as green VET, gender, migration, demo­gra­phic change, AI, or other areas that can be meaningful­ly linked to sus­taina­bi­li­ty in VET.

    Topics:

    • How do we understand the role of VET in preparing young people for work when labour markets and workplaces are in flux nationally and internationally?
    • Is this changing the nature of VET and VET curricula? Is it raising new questions on work, labour markets and education? What is core to VET that is stable across different contexts?
    • Are systems looking more similar or more different from each other?
    • What are the main factors—such as workplace organisation, changing labour markets, changing enrolment in schools and universities, and the nature of economies that are influencing different aspects of VET provision—such as curriculum, governance, partnerships, enrollment patterns—in different countries?
    • How do we connect better as researchers, and use VET research to build connection?

    • Submission of abstracts: opens 15 October 2026, closes 15 November 2026
    • Notification of acceptance: 15 December 2026
    • Submission of full paper: 20 February 2027
    • Feedback to your paper: 31 March 2027. You will then have 10 days to make the necessaries changes.
