Vocational Education, Skilled Workers and Transformation in an International Perspective

Contributions of Skilled Work to Occupational Task Change and Innovation

Veranstalter: BIBB - Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training

The conference aims to bring together researchers from various disciplines such as labor market economics, sociology of companies and organizations, business and personnel management, and vocational education research in an international context.

During the conference, two keynote speeches will be presented, research results will be presented and discussed in working groups. The results will be bundled in a concluding discussion as part of a panel with Jörg Markowitsch as one discussant.

The conference will feature two keynote speeches, one by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Hubert Esser, the President of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), and another one by Dr. Kirak Ryu, Head of the “Skills Development and Qualifications Research” department of the Korean Vocational Education Institute (KRIVET). The keynotes will serve as an introduction to the conference’s theme.

Within the working groups, experts will present their various studies and then lead a discussion on future research questions and potential projects. The practical, political, and academic significance of the research findings will be highlighted, and the interdisciplinary approach will enable encounters that would not otherwise take place.

The concluding discussion will broaden the perspective by integrating experts from various national vocational education research institutions and international organizations.

7th Crossing Boundaries Conference

Learning Across Continents: Conversations in a divided world

VETNET

Topics:

  • How do we understand the role of VET in preparing young people for work when labour markets and workplaces are in flux nationally and internationally?
  • Is this changing the nature of VET and VET curricula? Is it raising new questions on work, labour markets and education? What is core to VET that is stable across different contexts?
  • Are systems looking more similar or more different from each other?
  • What are the main factors—such as workplace organisation, changing labour markets, changing enrolment in schools and universities, and the nature of economies that are influencing different aspects of VET provision—such as curriculum, governance, partnerships, enrollment patterns—in different countries?
  • How do we connect better as researchers, and use VET research to build connection?

Embracing Diversity in Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Umeå University

Vocational Education and Training (VET) in the Nordic countries is shaped by strong welfare traditions, close relationships between education and working life, and longstanding ambitions of equality, inclusion and high‑quality education for all. Nevertheless, Nordic VET systems display substantial variation and complexity, influenced by social, demographic, pedagogical and structural differences across countries, regions, institutions and vocational fields. The 2027 NORDYRK conference Embracing Diversity in VET invites researchers, practitioners and policymakers to explore how such diversity shapes the conditions, opportunities and challenges of VET.   The Call for abstracts opens on November 11, 2026 and closes on January 31, 2027. Registration is required.
