GreenComp in Practice – an evolving framework for sustainability

A new publication on the uptake and implementation of the GreenComp framework across various educational settings has been published by the European Commission.

The European Commission introduced GreenComp to encourage a unified understanding of sustainability competences, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate and environmental crises. A study by Technopolis and 3s (Monika Auzinger, Zsuzsanna Zarka) explored the uptake of GreenComp in various educational settings through a series of case studies. The analytical report has recently been published under the title GreenComp in practice: case studies on the use of the European competence framework. The research aimed to understand the motivations behind using GreenComp and other sustainability frameworks, document the process of its application, assess its initial results, and offer recommendations for its broader adoption. The study involved mapping 56 initiatives, conducting interviews, and reviewing additional sustainability competence frameworks, resulting in 12 detailed case studies across different educational levels.

Key findings revealed that GreenComp is widely adaptable, being implemented across various education levels and regions, with projects in countries like Finland, Greece, Italy, and Spain. The case studies highlighted diverse approaches, such as integrating sustainability competences into curricula, creating learning materials, and developing online knowledge-sharing platforms. The framework’s success depends on its flexibility, the expertise of participants, and collaborative efforts, though challenges include ensuring its adaptability to different contexts and resource demands. Recommendations for the future include offering practical guidance, improving dissemination, fostering collaboration through Communities of Practice, and maintaining GreenComp as a dynamic, evolving framework through regular updates.
