Place, Knowledge, Skills: Applied universities driving regional competitiveness

EURASHE 34th Annual Conference

Veranstalter: EURASHE

Amidst rising geopolitical challenges and global competition, the President of the European Commission has called for a greater focus on Europe’s economic competitiveness. The recently published report by Mario Draghi “The future of European competitiveness” underlines that in today’s global economy, competitiveness is built on a highly skilled workforce, as well as the creation and application of new knowledge. In his report “More than a Market”, former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta has renewed a long-standing call for a fifth freedom in the European Single Market, allowing for greater circulation of human capital and knowledge. Yet, European competitiveness should be promoted with a sustainable and inclusive approach. Increasing competitiveness in all regions will make Europe much greater than the sum of its parts, and ensure that there are no ‘left behind places’ that breed populism and nationalism.

How can Higher Education Institutions contribute to this objective within regional innovation ecosystems adapted to the local context, following the smart specialisation approach? This is the guiding question for the 34th Annual Conference of EURASHE, the European Association for the Applied Sciences in Higher Education.

The Making of Apprenticeships

Divergence, Experience, and the Transformation of Vocational Education & Training

Dietmar Frommberger & Christoph Porcher

The conference explores the making and remaking of apprenticeships as a global historical phenomenon, tracing how pre-industrial craft training evolved under industrialisation, state-building, and changing educational ideas. It focuses both on institutional change and on the lived experiences of apprentices, masters, and other actors, and invites contributions from all periods and world regions.

Learning Across Continents: Conversations in a divided world

VETNET

Topics:

  • How do we understand the role of VET in preparing young people for work when labour markets and workplaces are in flux nationally and internationally?
  • Is this changing the nature of VET and VET curricula? Is it raising new questions on work, labour markets and education? What is core to VET that is stable across different contexts?
  • Are systems looking more similar or more different from each other?
  • What are the main factors—such as workplace organisation, changing labour markets, changing enrolment in schools and universities, and the nature of economies that are influencing different aspects of VET provision—such as curriculum, governance, partnerships, enrollment patterns—in different countries?
  • How do we connect better as researchers, and use VET research to build connection?
