Global perspectives on innovative apprenticeship training

The ILO publication examines how innovative apprenticeships prepare people for lifelong learning to keep pace with changes in the labour market.

New technologies, demographic changes, climate change, globalisation and, more recently, crises such as the COVID 19 pandemic are causing significant disruption in the world of work. Against this backdrop, it is becoming increasingly important to build a flexible workforce capable of navigating the rapidly changing labour market through appropriate and timely skills development, retraining and upskilling. The use of apprenticeship models or dual training systems can be an effective solution to the challenges of the future labour market bridging the gap between education and training systems and the world of work.

The report “Towards lifelong learning and skills for the future of work: Global lessons from innovative apprenticeships” highlights the new role of apprenticeships within lifelong learning systems. It was produced in the research project “Apprenticeship Development for Universal Lifelong Learning and Training (ADULT)” of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Andrew McCoshan (Educational Disadvantage Centre Dublin City University) and Jörg Markowitsch (3s) bring together in it the findings from six thematic reports and three additional topics.
