Micro-Credentials for Enhanced Employability

A recent Peer Learning Activity by the European Commission (DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion) focused on enhancing trust in micro-credentials to improve employability. The synthesis report on the event is available now.

The virtual event, held on May 28–29, 2024, drew 93 participants from 24 countries, including policy makers, representatives from national ministries and agencies, social partners, and European institutions such as the European Commission, Cedefop and ETF. The Peer Learning Activity (PLA) was organised with the specific aim of discussing and sharing successful approaches to developing micro-credentials that are closely aligned with labour market needs, thereby bolstering their credibility and utility in enhancing employability. Micro-credentials have been gaining traction as a flexible way to upskill and reskill in response to dynamic job market demands.

During the event, participants had the opportunity to explore successful examples from Croatia, the virtual host country of the PLA, as well as from Estonia and Denmark. The European Commission provided an overview of the EU policy framework on micro-credentials, emphasizing the importance of a coherent and transparent approach to their implementation across member states. In addition, Cedefop presented new research on micro-credentials, shedding light on the current landscape and emerging trends in this area. The event also featured insights from the Erasmus+ project ‘Skills for long-term unemployed — SKY’, which demonstrated the practical application of micro-credentials in supporting individuals who are re-entering the workforce after prolonged unemployment.

3s was responsible for the content design and preparation of the event. Other tasks included supporting the organisation, moderation of discussions during the PLA and documenting the results of the PLA.

The synthesis report of the event can be downloaded here.
