New Resources for Teaching Nature-based Solutions in VET
How can biodiversity and NBS become part of everyday teaching in VET? Within the Horizon Europe project eNaBlS, 3s has developed a Teacher Training Guide and two ready-to-use Modules for teachers and trainers in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Continuous Vocational Education and Training (CVET).
The guide builds on the European sustainability competence framework GreenComp and experiences from the eNaBlS Living Labs. Its two parts, ‘Basics’ and ‘NBS in Practice’, cover broader biodiversity, ecology, and NBS topics, with practical topics such as environmental risks, food production, water management and urban development. Each chapter combines background information with suggested discussion questions and practical activities. Walking, challenge-based and tactile learning approaches encourage learners to engage through observation, experimentation and reflection.
The two modules turn these approaches into adaptable teaching sessions. ‘Fundamentals of NBS for VET’, designed primarily for Initial Vocational Education and Training (IVET), introduces learners to biodiversity, soil and water through a guided walk, experiments and a collaborative green-space design task. ‘Climate Walks for Municipal Development and Planning’, particularly suited to CVET and adult learners, explores real-life NBS interventions with local stakeholders and invites participants to develop their own planning proposals.
Developed in close collaboration with the eNaBlS partners and piloted in Austria, Greece and Lithuania, the materials can be adapted to different subjects, learner groups and local contexts. They are available in English, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, German, Greek and Lithuanian. At 3s, Julia Fellinger and Mariana Martins were responsible for developing the Teacher Training Guide and modules.
