Basic Skills Training for Vulnerable Adults: Webinar of the ESF+ Community of Practice

The practice-oriented online event explored and discussed ways to make basic skills education for vulnerable groups in Europe more inclusive.

Across Europe, many adults from diverse backgrounds still have difficulties in reading, writing, numeracy and problem-solving. At the same time, these basic skills are essential for social inclusion, employability and lifelong learning.

Jörg Markowitsch from 3s organised the webinar “Innovating Basic Skills Training for Vulnerable Adults: Flexible Formats, Learner-Centred Methods and Scalable Solutions” of the ESF+ Community of Practice on Employment, Education and Skills, which took place on 12 March 2026. More than 90 representatives from various organisations across 23 EU Member States participated.

The aim of the event was to:

  • examine innovative learning formats, pedagogical approaches and assessment methods that enhance participation and success among vulnerable adult learners,
  • explore how training programmes can combine functional and critical skills, real-life relevance and psychosocial support,
  • identify transferable practices and discuss conditions for scaling up successful initiatives within ESF+ and national systems.

The webinar highlighted the importance of flexible, learner-centred approaches to better engage vulnerable adults with diverse needs in basic skills training. It showcased practical experiences from Ireland and Austria, demonstrating how innovative formats and supportive learning environments can improve participation and outcomes. A study visit to Ireland will take place in June 2026.
