New directions for adult basic education

Basic education is an essential part of adult education. It helps individuals to improve their basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic as well as their IT skills. It helps migrants with low levels of formal education with learning the language of their host country. However, adult basic education is organised very differently within all European countries. Respective teacher training programmes lack a common, systematic basis.
3s coordinates ‘Bridging Barriers — Competence Development of Trainers in Adult Basic Education’ a three-year Erasmus+ funded project. Together with partners from Italy, Slovakia and Switzerland, foundations are being developed to make the field more professional and acknowledged across Europe.
The concrete goals include:
- The development of a competence matrix based on the Vocational Qualification Transfer System (VQTS) with the objective of clearly defining the qualifications of trainers and thus make them comparable.
- The development of a pilot course: a competence-based training for teachers including curriculum, methodology, design, and teaching materials.
- The development of networks to promote international exchange among teachers.
